Heavy rains kill 3 in Cebu, radio report says

August 17, 2009 Cebu City - Three people were reported killed in separate incidents caused by heavy rains in Cebu province over the weekend, a radio report said Monday.

Radio dzBB reported that in Talisay City, heavy rains at Sitio Central in Biasong village killed Rogie Flores, 26, and his five-year-old daughter.

The two were killed after an eight-foot fence fell on the roof of their house due to the rain that started pouring at 5 a.m. Sunday.

Flores and his family were buried in mud, dirt and rocks. Flores' wife Geraldine, 25, and three-year-old daughter survived the incident.

Neighbors rushed the Floreses to the Talisay City District Hospital in San Isidro village, but Flores and his five-year-old daughter were pronounced dead on arrival.

The Flores patriarch was also found to have protected his three-year-old daughter from the impact.

Also on Sunday morning, a 10-foot hollow-block fence collapsed on the house of 49-year-old Wilma Parba at Sitio Tabayng Lawon, Tisa village in Cebu City.

Rescuers needed four hours to remove Parba's body from rubble and mud.
