CEBU CITY OLYMPICS: Unit 5 upends Unit 9, captures secondary division title

October 12, 2009 CEBU City, Philippines - Unit 5 dethroned Unit 9 in the secondary division as Unit 4 emerged as champion in elementary division at the close of the 19th Cebu City Olympics at the Cebu City Sports Center yesterday.

The University of Cebu, which was already declared the overall winner in the tertiary division even before the final day took place, sealed its bid with 30 golds, 34 silvers and 16 and bronzes.

The big surprise though came when Unit 5 dislodged Unit 9 from the top spot in the second level with its 281 points haul. Unit 9 got only 243.25 points.

The result of the second boys football was still being determined as of this writing last night but even if the Abellana National School booters comprising Unit 9 will successfully defend their title, it won't affect the overall standings as they will earn only 30 points if they achieve that feat.

Of the 11 events they participated in, Unit 5 dominated athletics in both boys and girls divisions, thanks to the efforts of the UC runners under the tutelage of Banzon.

Unit 5 also ruled the boys and girls chess, table tennis, badminton, dancesport, boys taekwondo and arnis, and girls swimming.

Unit 9, which dropped to second place, lorded it over in baseball, sepak takraw, softball and girls gymnastics.

Unit 1 wound up third with 234.5 points.

In the elementary level, the top three squads were Unit 4 with 285.5 points, Unit 6 with 194.25 points and Unit 1 with 172.5 points.

In the collegiate competition, UC ended its campaign by defeating the University of San Jose-Recoletos to pocket gold medal in basketball.

Behind UC in the final standings were SWU with a 21-8-21 gold-silver-bronze medal tally, University of San Carlos with 19-8-3, CNU with 8-10-12, USJ-R with 3-2-3, and the University of the Visayas with a solitary gold. (THE FREEMAN)
