Cebu hospital gets aid from Hawaii

CEBU CITY – The Visayas Community Medical Center (VCMC), a tertiary and training hospital located in this city, has again received another 40-foot container vans loaded with medical equipment due to the efforts of the Hawaii Gospel Rescue Mission (HGRM).
VCMC medical director Eli Belarmino disclosed that their hospital had been a recipient of the said medical equipment since 2007 and the donation has really helped in the improvement of their services.
Among the donated equipment include hospital beds, mattresses, bedside tables, wheelchairs, walkers, intravenous (IV) fluid poles, suction pumps, IV pumps, blood pressure monitors and other medical tools.
“These supplies will further improve our services, as it will cost the hospital at least R5 million to acquire such equipment noting that such devices are really expensive especially if they are brand new,” he said.
Belarmino added that other medical equipment will also be donated to less fortunate district hospitals in the region.
Belarmino also disclosed that since VCMC is a 200-bed capacity with at least 150 to 160 average in-patients daily, the donated medical supplies will be used to replace the hospital’s worn-out equipment.
Meanwhile, HGRM chief executive officer Luz Bayot in a press statement stressed that even if the donated hospital beds maybe outdated in the United States (US), but for VCMC, it is something so special.
“With the addition of other furniture, fixtures and equipment such as hospital beds, labor beds, baby warmers, bassinettes, examination tables, medical monitors, wheelchairs, crutches, nephro-machines, this is expected to serve thousands of patients at the VCMC,” said Bayot.
Bayot admitted that even if it takes a lot of hard work, paper works, time and effort to be able to transport the said medical apparatus from Hawaii to Cebu, “the fulfillment it brings to our group is all worth it,” Bayot said.
