‘Resolve Compostela poll dispute’

07/14/2010 - CAPITOL officials urged the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to immediately resolve the election dispute between Mayor Joel Quiño and former mayor Ritchie Wagas in Compostela town, Cebu.
Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia said services in the town have declined despite the presence of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).

Regional DILG-7 Director Pedro Noval is acting Compostela mayor. Garcia declined to take sides on the dispute.

“My personal opinion is different from my stand as governor who is tasked to uphold the law,” the governor said.

Vice Gov. Gregorio Sanchez joined the Provincial Board (PB) in reiterating that Quiño and not Noval, should sit in as mayor.

Sanchez said Quiño already took his oath of office and assumed as mayor of Compostela town last June 30.

“If there will be election protest, let them file while Quino be allowed to already assume office,” Sanchez told CEBU DAILY NEWS.

The PB approved a resolution authored by Board Members Thadeo Ouano and Sergio Restauro that sought an early resolution of the election case.

Ouano said Quiño should sit as Compostela mayor since he was elected by the people.

Quiño ran under the Bakud Party which holds an alliance with the One Cebu Party of Governor Garcia.

The Comelec is scheduled to convene en banc in order to resolve the election case in Compostela within the week. (Cebu Daily News)
