100 city residents rush to beat listup deadline

08/15/2010 - It was a busy day for Cebu City Comelec personnel yesterday as people rushed to the Comelec offices to beat the deadline for the barangay election registration.

Cebu City north district election officer Marchel Sarno said that yesterday's registration turnout was heavy compared to other days since the registration started on Aug. 4.

The registration for barangay election voters is from Aug. 4 to 13. The rRegistration for the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) election is from Aug. 6 to 15.

Sarno said that the Comelec offices would be closed by 7 p.m.

But Sarno said he would accept the registration forms of the people who were at the Comelec offices yesterday.

Applicants will be scheduled next week for their data capturing.

Desina Brigoli, a laundry woman, said that yesterday was the only time that she could get away from her work to register for the barangay elections.

A 67-year-old woman from barangay Buot Taup, who refused to be named, said she also only found time to register yesterday.

She said that she went straight to the Comelec office after having a medical checkup.

Meanwhile, Rengelle Pelayo, SK Federation-Cebu City president, said that she was supporting moves to reform the SK instead of abolishing it.

Pelayo cited the issues that had tarnished the SK image.

These include some SK officials who were no longer active yet still receiving their up to P10,000 a month honoraria, and the attendance problem of SK chairpersons during monthly meetings.

She said she would meet with all SK chairpersons in Cebu City this Sunday to formulate a bill proposing reforms in the SK.

These include the increase of the age bracket from at 15 years old to 17 years old to 17 years old to 21 years old or up to 25 years old, and the bid to have fiscal autonomy from the barangay. /with a report from USJR Intern Fatrick Tabada. (Inquirer)
