Coal power plant in SRP okay with me – Mayor Rama

10/12/2010 - CEBU City Michael Rama yesterday said that he favored having a coal power plant set up inside or outside the South Road Properties (SRP) if the national government could not solve power supply problem in Cebu or the Visayas.

Rama, however, said that no investor had yet submitted a proposal to finance the coal power plant.

He said that what the city government received was the proposal of Filinvest Land Inc. about setting up a waste to energy plant at the SRP.

The setting up of a power plant in the city was discussed during a meeting with public utility groups while he was still an acting mayor. The mayor, who was out of the country then, was now Rep. Tomas Osmena (Cebu City south district).

Rama said he suggested to have a power plant established in the city as part of the city's intervention to assure a stable supply of power towards 2013 or beyond.

But he said only if the national government could no longer solve or improve the power situation in the Visayas.

The mayor said that he favored a coal power plant after he saw a presentation made by power stakeholders attended by Energy Secretary Rene Almendras in Parklane Hotel two months ago.

Based on that presentation, the stakeholder showed that the coal power plant in Taipei, Taiwan was at the heart of the city and beside a shopping mall.

Rama said the trend nor for power plants is it could anywhere as long as all the requirements of security, health are strictly handled. (Cebu Daily News)
